The first genome-sequenced cotton species is Gossypium raimonddi. G. raimonddi contributes the D genome to the allotetraploid cotton G. hirsutum (AD genome) that is the source of the majority of cotton production. G. raimonddi genome assembly represents ~750 megabases distributed on 13 pseudomolecules and 22 large scaffolds (phytozome). A recent cotton genome assembly produces ~775 MB sequences with ~570 MB incorporated into 13 pseudomolecules (Wang et al. Nature Genetics,2012). RNA-seq data support 40,976 annotated genes.
