Rice (Oryza sativa) is an important cereal and model monocot. Its sequenced genome was originally published on Science in 2002 (ref1, ref2). The current version of the rice genome (Oryza sativa L. ssp. japonica) contains ~370 megabases with 40,577 non-transposon related genes on 12 chromosomes.
